UCH Resident Doctors To Resume Work Wednesday After Strike Suspension

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has announced that its members will resume duties at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, following the suspension of the nationwide strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

The President of ARD UCH, Dr Uthman Adedeji, confirmed the development in an interview on Tuesday in Ibadan, stating that the hospital’s doctors would comply with the directive issued by the national body.

Adedeji explained that the decision to resume work followed an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting of NARD, where members resolved to suspend the strike action.

The nationwide strike had earlier been declared over the Federal Government’s failure to meet the association’s demands, including issues related to doctors’ welfare and remuneration.

Among the key demands were the reversal of the revised Professional Allowance, payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, and the prompt disbursement of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).

According to Adedeji, the suspension of the strike came after the Federal Government reversed its position on the revised professional allowance and promised to address other pending issues raised by the association.

The ARD UCH president stated that the hospital would not admit new patients until Wednesday morning to allow doctors properly hand over existing cases to consultants.

He explained that stable patients would be discharged during the transition period.

“No new cases, including emergencies, will be accepted until full services resume at the scheduled time,” Adedeji said.

He added that some doctors may be allowed extra time to manage critically ill patients beyond the handover period, subject to approval by the association’s leadership.

Adedeji reiterated the commitment of resident doctors to patient care while urging the Federal Government to promptly address the issues raised by NARD.

He warned that resolving the concerns would be necessary to prevent future disruptions in Nigeria’s health sector.
