Vetland Schools sweep Lagos Islamic, Science quiz contest

Vetland Schools emerged victorious in both the senior and junior categories at the grand finale of the Muslim Teachers’ Association of Nigeria Islamic Studies and Science Quiz Competition held at Immaculate Heart Senior High School Hall, Maryland, Lagos.

In the senior secondary school category, Vetland Senior Grammar School, represented by Ismail Opedara and Oyewunmi Oyekemi, clinched first place with 67 points.

They edged out Ransome Kuti Senior Grammar School, Mushin, which scored 65 points, while Birrel Avenue Senior High School, Education District IV, took third with 57 points.

Other participating schools in the senior category included Army Cantonment Boys Senior Secondary School, Ojo; Ilado Community Junior High School; and Oreyo Senior Grammar School, Ikorodu, which finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

In the junior category, Vetland Junior Grammar School dominated the competition with 87 points, followed by Igbobi Junior High School with 84 points in second place, and Agindingbi Junior High School in third. Badagry Junior Grammar School, Muritala Ajadi Animashaun Community Junior Grammar School, and Lagos State Model Junior College, Agbowa Ikosi, secured fourth, fifth, and sixth positions.

Contestants in the senior category were tested in Biology, Chemistry, English Language, Islamic Studies, Mathematics, and Physics, while juniors were assessed in Basic Science and Technology, English Studies, Islamic Studies, Mathematics, and National Values Education.

On the choice of subjects, MUTAN Organising Committee Chairman, Busari Alegbe, said, “The choice of subjects is deliberate. Islam is synonymous with knowledge, and the Quran encourages Muslims to seek knowledge far and wide.”

A total of 236 junior secondary schools and 208 senior secondary schools from the six education districts in Lagos State participated in the competition, which advanced through zonal, district, and state levels.

Ismail Opedara of Vetland Senior Grammar School attributed the school’s victory to faith, teamwork, and thorough preparation. “We give all glory to Almighty Allah. Our success is also due to teamwork and our effort in covering the entire syllabus,” she said.

Opedara, who had previously won in the junior category during the inaugural edition, added, “That experience really helped us this time.”

The competition highlighted both academic excellence and religious studies, reinforcing MUTAN’s commitment to fostering knowledge, values, and holistic education among Lagos State students.
