We May Be Unable To Participate In 2027 Election – ADC Raises Alarm Over Supreme Court Delay On Judgement

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has written to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, asking for a quick decision from the Supreme Court over the party’s ongoing leadership dispute.

Naija News reports that the request was made in a letter dated April 28, 2026, by lawyers representing the faction linked to former Senate President David Mark. The legal team said the delay in delivering judgment could affect the party’s chances of taking part in the 2027 general elections.

The Supreme Court had earlier heard the case on April 22, 2026, and reserved its judgment without giving a date. The matter is being handled by a five-member panel led by Justice Mohammed Garba, following appeals challenging earlier rulings from lower courts on the party’s leadership crisis.

In the letter sent to the Chief Justice, the party’s lawyers explained that actions already taken by the electoral body, based on a previous court ruling, have left the ADC without a recognised leadership for now, even though it remains a registered political party.

They warned that if the Supreme Court does not give its judgment soon, the party may not be able to meet the conditions required to participate in the elections.

“Without the delivery of judgment within the next three days from the date of this letter, the ADC stands the grave and irreversible risk of being excluded from participating in the 2027 General Elections. This would disenfranchise millions of Nigerians who have subscribed to the ideals of the ADC and deny them their constitutional right to freely associate and contest elections through a political party of their choice.

“My Lord, we are mindful of the enormous responsibilities and workload of this Honourable Court. We are equally aware that justice delayed, in this peculiar circumstance, would amount to justice denied.

“The entire political future of our client and the legitimate expectations of its members nationwide now hang in the balance”, the letter read in part.
