Why PDP faction met with David Mark-led ADC in Abuja

The leadership of a faction of the  Peoples Democratic Party has paid a solidarity visit to leaders of a faction of African Democratic Congress over what it described as increasing political pressure on opposition parties in Nigeria.

The visit, according to a Wednesday statement signed by the factional PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, followed “recent political attacks targeted at Nigeria’s opposition parties.”

During the meeting, the PDP delegation warned of a broader threat to opposition politics in the country.

“The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) paid a solidarity visit to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over the recent political attacks targeted at Nigeria’s opposition parties,” the statement read.

The party said the development reflects a pattern affecting multiple opposition groups.

“The PDP acknowledged the growing and shared threat confronting opposition political parties in the country, noting that similar pressures have been experienced by the PDP in recent times,” the statement added.

It also stressed the need for caution to protect democratic values.

“The delegation emphasised the need vigilance in the face of actions capable of undermining democratic principles and political plurality,” the statement said.

The PDP team was led by Oyo State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde and included Adolphus Wabara, Jerry Gana, and Babangida Aliyu, among others.

They were received by ADC leaders including a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi.

In their response, ADC leaders appreciated the visit and reiterated concerns about the state of democracy.

“The ADC leadership expressed appreciation to the PDP for the visit and reiterated the existential threat facing democracy in Nigeria, particularly through the targeted weakening of major opposition parties,” the statement noted.

Both parties affirmed the need for continued collaboration in defence of democratic values and institutions.
