Wike announces N500m support fund for late Senator Mpigi’s family

…Urges Loyalty Beyond Tributes

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced a N500 million support fund for the family of late Senator Barinada Barry Mpigi, urging political associates not to abandon those he left behind.

Wike made the announcement on Thursday during a Night of Tribute held in Port Harcourt in honour of the late lawmaker, stressing that beyond words and ceremonies, tangible support for the deceased’s family is essential.

“Forming committees for burial is not enough. We must show clearly that we will not abandon the family he left behind,” he said.

The minister, accompanied by his wife, Justice Eberechi Wike, alongside top political figures including Mao Ohuabunwa, Sandy Onor, and Dan Orbih, described the late senator as a loyal and dependable ally who stood firm during challenging political moments.

An emotional Wike recalled Mpigi’s unwavering support during difficult times. “When we had political challenges, Barry was always coming to my house to show solidarity. One day, he came very early and said, ‘Master, no matter the situation, I will never leave you,’” he recounted.

He further praised Mpigi’s commitment to the Ogoni people, highlighting his role in the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology in Ogoni, noting that the N500 million intervention would be used to establish a foundation to support the family and preserve his legacy.

Political leaders across party lines also paid glowing tributes, describing Mpigi as a bridge-builder and committed statesman whose death has created a vacuum in Rivers politics.

Speaking on behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha described the late senator as a consummate politician who was gentle, friendly, and dedicated to party growth.

Similarly, former senator and Chairman of the Rivers State Elders Forum, Magnus Abe, said Mpigi’s life and contributions would remain indelible.

“We are not gathered merely because a man has died, but because of the life he lived. Barry died at a time when his services were most needed, but his contributions to Ogoni, Rivers State and Nigeria will never be forgotten,” Abe said.

Also speaking, Ambassador-designate to Ireland, OCJ Okocha, described Mpigi as a patriotic Rivers son who played key roles in national political processes.

In a family tribute, the Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Tai, Monday Douglas Mpigi, described the late senator as the backbone of the family.

“He was the rock of our family—dependable and always there for everyone. He believed in people even when they did not believe in themselves,” he said.

Other tributes from political leaders, including Ferdinand Alabraba, Osita Ngwu, and Allwell Onyesoh, highlighted Mpigi’s dedication to service, legislative impact, and grassroots development.

The late senator, who died on February 19, 2026, was widely regarded as a committed public servant and grassroots mobiliser whose legacy of loyalty, service, and generosity continues to resonate across Rivers State and beyond.

Dignitaries at the event urged his family and associates to uphold his enduring values, as prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.
