Wike declares PDP crisis over, opens door for returnees

Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory has said the internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has eased, urging former members to return as the party shifts focus to reconciliation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, Wike maintained that the party had moved past its turbulent phase and was now prioritising unity and rebuilding.

“As far as I’m concerned, the convention has come and gone. People are trooping in. I will say, the door is open. Yes, we have had crisis. Now the crisis is over. Do we still have to shut our doors? No. Certainly not,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor described politics as a contest rather than a battle, cautioning against a winner-takes-all approach that could hinder reconciliation.

“Politics is not a fight to finish. It’s like a game, like a football. If you see it as a do or die, it becomes difficult to reconcile. For us, it’s not that way.

“We have had our differences, but if you’re really sincere, there’s nothing left. We can do it together and move the party forward,” he added.

Wike disclosed that several former members had already indicated interest in rejoining the PDP, noting that the political climate was becoming more accommodating for returnees willing to contribute to the party’s growth.

He also cautioned aspirants seeking political office, stressing that visibility and consistent engagement, rather than titles, would determine their relevance in future contests.

“There’s no doubt that we have a lot of work to do, but what is important is that we have put the convention behind us,” he said.

The PDP has faced a prolonged leadership crisis since 2025, with rival factions holding parallel conventions and engaging in legal disputes developments that raised concerns about the party’s cohesion ahead of the next general election.
