JUST IN: Real Madrid appoint Jose Mourinho on three-year contract
Jose Mourinho has signed a three-year contract to become the new head coach of Real Madrid, marking a return to the Spanish giants more than a decade after his first spell at the club.
According to BBC Sport, the Portuguese manager will not be officially unveiled until after the club’s presidential election on June 7, although an agreement has already been reached.
Mourinho, 63, leaves Benfica after taking charge in September and guiding the club to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga.
He previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup during his successful first spell.
He replaces Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January after Xabi Alonso’s departure but failed to deliver a strong turnaround in results.
Real Madrid ended the 2025–26 season without a trophy, with Barcelona winning La Liga and Bayern Munich eliminating them 6–4 on aggregate in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Since leaving Madrid in 2013, Mourinho has managed several top European clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma—where he won the Europa Conference League in 2022—and Fenerbahce.
The club is now expected to rely on his experience to restore success and return to dominance in European football.
