Akpabio Moves To Rescue Senators Who Lost Party Tickets Ahead Of 2027 Elections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has moved to reassure senators who were unsuccessful in securing their parties’ tickets during the recently concluded primary elections, indicating that steps are being taken to help some of them reclaim their chances of returning to the Senate.

Akpabio addressed his colleagues on Thursday as the Senate resumed plenary following a three-week recess that had been set aside for lawmakers to participate in party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While acknowledging the disappointment felt by those who lost out, he encouraged them to accept the results as an inherent part of democratic participation.

The Senate President pointed out that although several members of the chamber’s leadership sailed through their primaries without opposition, a significant number of lawmakers were not as fortunate.

He nonetheless argued that the bigger victory lies in the sustenance of democracy as a system, transcending the wins and losses of individual politicians.

Reports indicate that at least 40 serving senators failed to secure their parties’ nominations across various political platforms, while roughly 60 were successful.

Akpabio congratulated those who emerged with tickets and commended the political parties for conducting the exercises, while also appealing to those who suffered setbacks to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic values.

He further disclosed that the Senate leadership had been given assurances ahead of the primaries that the number of casualties would not be as high as it turned out to be.

In a bid to provide some comfort to the affected lawmakers, Akpabio revealed that efforts are actively underway to minimise the impact of the losses and find possible remedies for some of those who missed out.

He specifically highlighted the role of Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who he said is currently engaging relevant stakeholders with the goal of reducing the number of senators who ultimately lose their tickets and ensuring that some of those affected are still able to secure their parties’ nominations.
