BREAKING: Nigerian Union Of Teachers, Take-It-Back Activists Lead Massive Protest Over Abduction Of Schoolchildren In Oyo

Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Lagos and Ogun states on Tuesday joined the Take-It-Back Movement to stage a protest over the abduction of schoolchildren, teachers and the principal of a school in Ahoro-Esinle, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The protesters, who converged in different parts of Lagos and Ogun states, condemned the worsening insecurity across Nigeria and accused the government of failing to protect schools, teachers and pupils from incessant attacks by terrorists and armed bandits.

Carrying banners and placards with several inscriptions, the demonstrators demanded the immediate rescue of the kidnapped victims and stronger security measures to safeguard schools across the country.

Some of the placards displayed during the protest read: “Teachers teach, Government must protect,” “Bandits must not dictate the future of education,” “Protect Teachers, Protect the Future,” and “No Teacher Should Die in Service to Humanity.”

In Ogun State, protesters also carried placards bearing inscriptions such as “Bring Back Our Children, End Bad Governance Now,” “The Light to Learning Must Not Die in Darkness,” “Release Our Teachers and Learners Unconditionally,” “Nigeria, Our Blackboards Are Turning Into Graveyards,” and “We Say No to Attacks on Schools.”

The demonstrators lamented that schools, which should serve as safe centres for learning and development, have increasingly become targets of kidnappers and terrorists.

Speaking during the protest, some of the participants said the continuous attacks on schools were creating fear among teachers, parents and pupils, while also threatening the future of education in the country.

They noted that many teachers now go to work in fear, particularly in rural communities where security presence is weak and attacks by armed groups have become frequent.

According to the protesters, the abduction in Ahoro-Esinle is another painful reminder of the growing insecurity confronting the nation’s education sector.

They called on the Nigerian government and security agencies to act swiftly to rescue the abducted teachers, principal and pupils alive, while ensuring that schools across Nigeria are properly secured against future attacks.

The protesters further warned that continued silence and failure by the authorities would deepen the crisis in the education sector and discourage teachers from serving in vulnerable communities.
