Kano to solarise 484 apex health facilities as PHC board reviews Q1 performance

The Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB) has announced plans to solarise all 484 apex primary health care facilities across the state as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and ensure uninterrupted power supply in health centres.

The announcement was made during the board’s first-quarter 2026 Integrated Supportive Supervision (ISS) Review Meeting held at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Kano.

The meeting, chaired by the Director General of KSPHCMB, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, reviewed the performance of primary healthcare services across the state and assessed progress in facility readiness, service provision, and service utilisation.

According to findings presented at the meeting, the state recorded significant improvements in key healthcare performance indicators, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen the primary healthcare system.

The statement was signed by the Public Relations Officer of KSPHCMB, Sa’adatu Suleiman, and made available to journalists on Thursday in Kano.

However, stakeholders identified several areas requiring urgent intervention, including infrastructure deficits, shortages of healthcare personnel, inadequate cold chain equipment, insufficient essential medicines, maternal and newborn healthcare equipment, and low service utilisation in some facilities.

Participants at the review meeting recommended targeted investments and system-strengthening measures to sustain the gains achieved while addressing the identified challenges.

Speaking during the session, Professor Ibrahim commended the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for its continued commitment to the development of the health sector.

He noted that the planned solarisation of the 484 apex primary health care facilities would enhance service delivery, particularly for women and children who rely on primary healthcare centres for essential medical services.

The Director General also acknowledged the contributions of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and the Solina Centre for International Development and Research, whose 18-month intervention programme has played a key role in strengthening Kano’s primary healthcare system.

As the intervention approaches its close-out phase, Professor Ibrahim expressed optimism that the state government would sustain and build upon the achievements recorded under the partnership to further improve health outcomes for residents across Kano State.
