Kebbi gov unveils plans to review primary school teachers’ salaries

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has announced plans to inaugurate a committee to review the salary structure of primary school teachers across the state, assuring teachers that his administration remains committed to improving their welfare and ensuring full implementation of the minimum wage.

The governor made the announcement.on Tuesday during an interactive session with primary school teachers, education secretaries, local government chairmen and other stakeholders held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi.

Idris said the committee would be given 30 days to submit its report and recommendations on issues affecting teachers’ salaries and welfare.

“I am going to inaugurate a committee that will look into the salary scale of primary school teachers across the state. The committee will be given 30 days to submit its report, and we will carefully consider its recommendations,” the governor said.

He assured the teachers that their concerns would receive prompt attention, stressing that his administration would ensure fairness in implementing the minimum wage.

Describing teaching as his constituency, Idris said he would not allow teachers to be shortchanged.

“This government belongs to you because I am one of you. I am still a teacher, and it was your support and votes that brought me to this position. I will not allow anyone to cheat you,” he stated.

The governor also cautioned teachers against allowing themselves to be used by individuals seeking to undermine his administration’s achievements.

“I urge you not to allow anyone to distract you from the progress and achievements recorded so far. Let us continue to work together for the development of our state,” he added.

During the meeting, the governor asked local government chairmen to clarify the status of salary adjustments for primary school teachers in their respective councils. The chairmen reportedly confirmed that salary increases had commenced but acknowledged that implementation was not yet complete.

Idris further pledged to introduce loan schemes for teachers, including vehicle, motorcycle and housing loans, to enhance their welfare.

“We are also working on programmes that will provide teachers with car loans, motorcycle loans and housing loans so that they can enjoy a greater sense of belonging and improve their living conditions,” he said.

He urged teachers to remain committed to their responsibilities, noting that quality basic education remains critical to the state’s future.

The governor assured the teachers that his administration would continue to prioritize their welfare and support the education sector.

In a related development, Governor Idris on Monday distributed 225 motorcycles to councillors from the 21 local government areas of Kebbi State as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and improve service delivery.

Speaking during the distribution ceremony at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi, the governor said the motorcycles were intended to facilitate councillors’ movement between their offices and constituencies.

“This gesture is part of our administration’s commitment to promoting good governance and ensuring that elected representatives at the grassroots have the necessary support to discharge their responsibilities effectively,” he said.

According to him, the motorcycles would particularly benefit councillors serving in remote communities where transportation challenges often hinder official duties.

“This support will go a long way in reducing the difficulties faced by some of you, especially those representing remote areas. We remain committed to bringing sanity, efficiency and accountability to governance and democratic practice in the state,” Idris stated.

The governor commended the councillors for their contributions to the development of their communities and urged them to continue supporting government policies and programmes aimed at improving people’s lives.

The distribution of the motorcycles is the latest in a series of welfare and support initiatives undertaken by the Kebbi State Government to strengthen local governance structures and enhance public service delivery across the state.
