Schoolchildren abduction: Oyo Muslim community counters terrorists on Sharia demands

The Muslim Community of Oyo State has strongly condemned the recent Sharia-related demands made by abductors, declaring that terrorists do not represent Islamic values and cannot speak for Muslims.

This is contained in a press statement signed by the Chairman of the community, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni and its Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade.

The reaction followed recent criminal acts where kidnappers attempted to justify their actions using religious rhetoric, clarifying that Islam strictly forbids kidnapping, terrorism and the extortion of innocent citizens. 

The group emphasized that legitimate Sharia advocates for justice, peace, and the protection of human life, which directly contradicts the violent actions of criminals.

The Muslim Community reiterated its full support for law enforcement agencies and urged authorities to track down the perpetrators swiftly.

Citing a Quran quotation, the leadership of the community called on all Muslims and residents of Oyo State to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities and reject any attempts to distort the peaceful teachings of Islam.

Meanwhile, under the aegis of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland and Grand Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, the community has announced a special prayer for the speedy and safe return of abductees from schools in Oriire Local government of Oyo State.

The prayer, according to the statement, will be led by Imam Agbotomokekere on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Yidi Agodi Praying Ground, Ibadan, at 10.30 am

The community implored all Muslims in Oyo State to join the prayer session, appreciating  the intervention of Oyo State and Federal Governments in their onerous intervention.  

The community prayed for divine guidance, for security agencies in their rescue efforts, so that there will not be any collateral casualty, as they conquer the criminals and bring back home safely the victims.

The Eagleonline reports that among the abductees are toddlers of 2-year olds, who are being exposed to very cruel treatment in the forests, in harsh conditions. 

On May 15, the criminals stormed many schools in Orire Local Council and abducted 39 students and eight teachers.
