War-torn Russia calls on US and Iran to ‘return to negotiating table’

The Kremlin called on the United States and Iran on Thursday to restart peace talks and said the new strikes in their war would be bad for the world economy.

“We call on all parties in this conflict to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, when asked by AFP about fresh attacks. He added that the escalation risks more “negative consequences for the situation in the region and the global economy.”
The current conflict between the United States and Iran is the result of decades of deep-seated geopolitical rivalry that escalated into direct military confrontation earlier in 2026.
Following heavy U.S. and Israeli airstrikes against Iranian military and nuclear sites, a fragile ceasefire was established but has recently broken down.
In response to the military pressure, Iran restricted transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime chokepoint handling 20% of global oil, prompting a counter-naval blockade by the U.S. that has severely spiked global energy prices.

The warfare is further fueled by Iran’s backing of regional proxy groups, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, which frequently target U.S. bases and Israeli territory.
Diplomatic efforts remain entirely deadlocked because the U.S. demands the permanent dismantling of Iran’s advanced nuclear program, while Tehran refuses to negotiate under the threat of active bombing campaigns and crippling economic sanctions.
