Xenophobia: South Africa moves to restore confidence among Nigerian travellers

The South African government has issued a reassuring statement to Nigerian travelers and investors, declaring that South Africa remains a safe and welcoming destination.

The reassurance comes directly from the South African Consulate General in Lagos, which moved swiftly to address growing security concerns and a sudden wave of travel cancellations by Nigerians.

This diplomatic push follows weeks of tense anti-immigrant protests and escalating xenophobic incidents across several major South African cities, which triggered mass voluntary repatriations.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Consulate said it was concerned about disruptions to travel plans by Nigerians following reports of unrest in some South African cities.

“South Africa remains firmly committed to the principles of constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and respect for the dignity and rights of all people,” the Consulate stated.

According to the statement, the South African government condemns all forms of intimidation, violence, discrimination and unlawful conduct directed at any individual, including foreign nationals.

The Consulate stressed that such actions do not reflect the values of South Africa’s democracy and are contrary to the spirit of Ubuntu, the African philosophy that emphasises shared humanity.

Quoting South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, the statement said: “South Africa is a country shaped by migration and remains open to visitors who comply with its legal and immigration frameworks.

“Migration, when properly managed and lawful, contributes positively to economic growth, regional cooperation and cultural exchange.”

The Consulate also clarified that while illegal immigration remains a legitimate public concern, it must be addressed through lawful government processes and institutions.

“No individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands,” the statement said.

It added that acts of violence, xenophobia and lawlessness do not reflect government policy or the will of the South African people and will not be tolerated.

According to the Consulate, the South African government remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all persons within its borders while strengthening immigration management in line with national security priorities.

The statement highlighted tourism as a major driver of inclusive economic growth and job creation, noting that South Africa continues to attract strong international interest due to its cultural diversity, natural attractions, business opportunities and the hospitality of its people.

It further noted that Nigeria remains one of South Africa’s largest tourism source markets in Africa, supported by longstanding historical, cultural and economic ties between both countries.

“The South African Consulate in Lagos wishes to reassure all travellers, stakeholders and investors that South Africa remains a safe and welcoming destination,” the statement said.

It added that law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the situation while the government engages communities to promote stability, safety and social cohesion.
