A head porter based in Aflao, Akpalu Prince, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Torkor Circuit Court in the Volta Region after being convicted of robbery for snatching a female immigration officer’s iPhone 12, valued at GH¢3,600.

Convicted on his own plea, Prince attacked the complainant at Ave Maria Junction in Aflao on Monday, July 13, 2026, forcibly snatching her phone before attempting to flee the scene.

His escape attempt was short-lived. After the complainant raised the alarm, he was chased down and apprehended a short distance away.

The Torkor Circuit Court’s sentencing reflects the continued use of Ghana’s robbery statute, which carries significant custodial penalties even in cases involving the theft of a single item, reflecting the use of force during the offence rather than the monetary value of the property involved.
