Army probes assault of UNIOSUN students by soldiers

The Commandant of the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has ordered a full investigation into allegations of har@ssment and ass@ult involving some military personnel and students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN).

Military personnel allegedly attached to the Army Depot in Osogbo on Monday night invaded off-campus hostels housing stu­dents of the University of Osun (UNIOSUN), ass@ult­ing students and confiscating their belongings.

The university’s spokesper­son, Ademola Adesoji, alleged that more than 20 students were directly affected during the opera­tion, claiming the soldiers assault­ed both male and female students. He also alleged that some fe­male students were stripped and subjected to indecent touching by the soldiers. He also alleged that the soldiers seized more than 60 electronic de­vices, including mobile phones, from the students during the raid.

The motive for the ass@ult is yet to be ascertained.

The students alongside the University’s VC staged a protest over the incident. 

In a statement issued by the Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, the Commandant directed that the facts surrounding the incident be thoroughly established and that anyone found culpable be brought to justice.

“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. Any conduct that falls short of that mandate is unacceptable.

No student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property,” the statement read.

It called on the Southwest Coordinator of NANS, Adeyemo Kayode, to provide all available evidence and witness statements to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.
