Buhari’s daughter dedicates Africa Peace Award to late former president

Hanan Buhari, daughter of Nigeria’s late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has dedicated her recognition as one of the 100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa to the memory of her father, saying his guidance and values shaped her commitment to integrity, service, and women’s empowerment.

Hanan received the honour at the 100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit held in Marrakech, Morocco.

The event was organised by DAVDAN Peace and Advocacy Foundation in partnership with 100 Most Notable Peace Icons Africa and attracted political leaders, business executives, diplomats, and development partners from across the continent.

Speaking after receiving the award, Hanan expressed appreciation to the organisers, led by Kingsley Amafibe, for the recognition and paid tribute to her late father.

“I dedicate this honour to my late father, President Muhammadu Buhari, whose guidance, discipline, and unwavering belief in me shaped the woman I have become. He taught me the importance of integrity, resilience, and selfless service.

“His confidence in me gave me the courage to believe in myself, and I will continue to uphold the values he instilled in me by working to empower women and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.

The summit celebrated individuals recognised for their contributions to leadership, peacebuilding, business, sustainable development, and other areas of public service across Africa.

Among the award recipients were Asu Kunemofa, Director of Finance and Accounts at the Niger Delta Development Commission; former House of Representatives member Dozie Nwankwo; and Sindiswa Mzamo.

Others included Mncedisi Dube; His Royal Highness Midiyavhathu Tshivhase; and Samuel Alabi.

The ceremony, held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès Marrakech within the Mövenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakech complex, also attracted prominent diplomats and government officials, including Charity Gbedawo; Shakilla Kazimbaya Umutoni; Lugumi Saidi; Nabila Rmili; Reginald Max; and Yassin El Moussi.

Hanan Buhari is the founder of the Hanan Buhari Foundation, through which she advocates for the welfare of women and children while promoting initiatives aimed at encouraging young women to pursue leadership roles and contribute to national and continental development.

Project Director of the summit, Ambassador Kingsley Amafibe, congratulated Hanan on the recognition, describing her as a role model whose commitment to advancing women’s participation in leadership continues to inspire a new generation of Africans.

He also commended her sustained efforts in promoting initiatives that encourage women to take on leadership responsibilities and actively participate in economic development.

Amafibe said the summit has continued to serve as one of Africa’s leading platforms for recognising excellence, strengthening strategic partnerships, promoting visionary leadership, and advancing initiatives that support sustainable peace and development across the continent.
