Death Certificate Reveals Ben Affleck’s Mom Died at His Los Angeles Home

Ben Affleck‘s mom, Christopher Anne “Chris” Affleck, spent her final moments at the actor’s Los Angeles residence after privately battling pancreatic cancer for several months.
A newly released death certificate has revealed that the retired schoolteacher died from cardiopulmonary arrest on June 2 at age 83. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma was also listed among the conditions that led to her death.
The document provides new insight into Chris’ final days, which remained largely private until her family confirmed her passing nearly two months later.
According to the death certificate obtained by Us Weekly, Chris died at 10:52 a.m. while “visiting son’s residence.” Property records reportedly connect the listed Los Angeles address to Ben.
The certificate identified cardiopulmonary arrest as Chris’ immediate cause of death and noted that she had been living with pancreatic adenocarcinoma for months. No autopsy was performed.
Her remains were being transferred to Earth Funeral in Las Vegas when the certificate was filed.
Although news of Chris’ death did not become public until July 24, her family said she died peacefully in her sleep on June 2.
Chris Affleck Was Given Six Months To Live
Chris was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025 and initially told she had approximately six months to live, according to the obituary her family published in The Boston Globe.
Following the diagnosis, she focused on one deeply personal goal. Her greatest wish was to remain alive long enough to watch one of her grandsons graduate from high school.
Chris achieved that goal on May 31, when she attended the graduation ceremony alongside her family. She died just two days later.
The Blast previously reported that the touching milestone became a central part of her family’s farewell, as it captured the close bond she shared with her grandchildren during the final decades of her life.
Chris had five grandchildren, including Ben’s children, Violet, Fin and Samuel, whom he shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, and Casey Affleck’s sons, Indiana and Atticus.
Her obituary described the five grandchildren as the “animating force” of her final 20 years and noted that she took particular pleasure in seeing them challenge authority and think independently.
Ben Affleck’s Mom Devoted Her Life To Teaching
Despite raising two future Academy Award winners, Chris built an accomplished life far removed from Hollywood.
After graduating from Harvard, she worked in public education for nearly four decades. Her career included teaching elementary school students and helping young people develop literacy skills.
Chris also encouraged Ben and Casey’s early interest in the arts. The brothers grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where their mother regularly took them to theatrical performances and encouraged them to make home movies.
Her friendship with a local casting director helped the boys secure early auditions, but Chris did not initially view acting as a reliable career. She reportedly placed Ben’s childhood acting earnings into a college fund and hoped he might eventually become a teacher.
That practical approach remained part of the family even as Ben and Casey became successful actors. Chris supported their ambitions while ensuring they understood that Hollywood could be unpredictable.
Ben Affleck Publicly Thanked His Mother After His First Oscar
Chris was beside Ben during one of the defining moments of his career.
She attended the 1998 Academy Awards, where Ben and Matt Damon won Best Original Screenplay for “Good Will Hunting.” After their names were announced, Ben embraced his mother before heading to the stage.
During the acceptance speech, he and Damon thanked their mothers, with Ben describing Chris and Damon’s mother as the most beautiful women in the room.
The moment reflected the major role Chris played before her sons found fame. After separating from their father, Timothy Affleck, she primarily raised Ben and Casey in Massachusetts and provided stability throughout their childhood.
Chris also remained connected to the extended family created during Ben’s marriage to Jennifer Garner.
Reports indicate that she continued spending time with the actress after the former couple ended their marriage, including joining family gatherings involving their three children.
Chris Affleck’s Activism Extended Beyond The Classroom
Chris’ life was also shaped by decades of political activism and public service.
During Mississippi’s Freedom Summer, she taught literacy classes as civil rights workers fought voter suppression and racial inequality. She later participated in demonstrations against the Vietnam War and embraced the political activism associated with the 1960s counterculture.
Her involvement continued long after she retired from teaching in 2008. Chris volunteered during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and traveled to Israel and Palestine in 2009. After returning home, she became involved with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine.
She was also a founding board member of Sustainable Cape, an organization focused on supporting local food systems and environmental education in Cape Cod. When one of her granddaughters needed a location for student activist training sessions, Chris opened her home and reportedly attended the workshops herself while taking notes.
Those details offer a fuller portrait of Ben Affleck’s mom beyond her connection to two famous sons. Chris spent nearly four decades educating children, remained politically active throughout her life, and devoted her final years to the five grandchildren who brought her immense pride.
