EFCC releases two Obi supporters after hours of questioning over alleged naira abuse

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released Peter Akah, aka Randy Peter and Oruche Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, two prominent supporters of the Obidient Movement and Peter Obi, after grilling them for roughly 11 hours.

The two activists, known for their support of Peter Obi, honoured an invitation from the anti-graft agency at its headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday and were released around midnight.

They were, however, asked to return on Thursday to continue the investigation.

Chidiebere Mark, an activist popularly known as Justice Crack, disclosed the development in a post on X.

Mark said he accompanied Akah and Precious to the EFCC headquarters when they arrived around 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

“It was a very long day. They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day, 16th July 2026,” he wrote.

The whereabouts of the two supporters had sparked concern on social media on Wednesday evening after news emerged that they were being questioned by the EFCC.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who is representing the pair, said the invitation was linked to allegations of naira abuse.

In a statement on Thursday, Effiong said his clients explained to investigators that the notes referenced in the allegation were not genuine naira but prop money used for entertainment purposes.

He wrote: “I can confirm that they were invited by the EFCC to appear on 6th July 2026, to offer clarifications over allegation of abuse of the Naira by separate invitation letters dated 24th June, 2026.

“We wrote to the Commission to reschedule the meeting to Wednesday, 15th July, 2026 since our clients were not available on the originally scheduled date.

“We arrived at the Commission with Peter for Nigeria and Mama Pee on Wednesday and met with the investigators,” he said.

“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC headquarters. We will be returning today in furtherance of the investigation.

“During the interrogation on Wednesday, which took considerable time, the Commission acted professionally.

“Our clients clarified that what was referenced were prop money for entertainment and not naira notes.

“They are in high spirits and appreciate the concerns expressed by Nigerians regarding their safety.”

The development comes days after Peter Obi, the NDC 2027 presidential candidate, alleged that the federal government was targeting opposition figures and making it difficult for them to operate freely.
