“FG committed to welfare of military veterans” – SGF Akume

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and well-being of Nigeria’s military veterans, acknowledging their sacrifices in defending the nation’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, gave the assurance on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, when he received a delegation from the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, led by its Chairman, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry.

Akume said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains dedicated to improving the lives of retired military personnel who served with courage and patriotism.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is proud of the Nigerian military, both serving and retired. Their sacrifices have laid the foundation for the peace and stability we enjoy today.

“As a government, we remain committed to ensuring that our veterans are treated with dignity, respect, and the care they deserve,” the SGF said.

He assured the delegation that concerns raised by the Nigerian Legion would be given careful consideration in collaboration with relevant government agencies.

Akume emphasised that the Renewed Hope Agenda includes policies aimed at supporting veterans who have served the country with honour.

In his welcome remarks, the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, noted that the growing number of retired military personnel calls for a fresh assessment of existing legislation.

He called for stronger collaboration between the government and the Nigerian Legion to enhance veterans’ welfare and support families of fallen heroes.

Ms. Grace Morenike Henry, in her presentation, appealed for the review and modernisation of the Nigerian Legion Act to reflect current realities.

She also advocated the creation of a dedicated Federal Ministry of Veterans Affairs to better coordinate pensions, healthcare, rehabilitation, and reintegration programmes — citing models in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
