Gunmen release two Benue siblings after abduction

Gunmen have released two of the three siblings abducted in the early hours of Saturday while taking the corpse of their mother from Abuja to Benue State for burial.

Three siblings who were conveying the corpse of their mother from Abuja were reportedly abducted around 4 a.m. on Saturday while on their way to the Iklenyi community in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state.

The kidnappers were reported to have abducted the siblings between Omutele and Ankpechi along the Ogobia-Otukpo Road in Oglewu District of Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

A local source who simply identified himself as Elijah told our correspondent on Sunday that the kidnappers released two of the siblings on Saturday night but were still holding one captive.

Elijah said, “The kidnappers released two siblings and dumped the corpse last night (Saturday night) to allow them to bury their mother.

“But one of them is still being held.”

The Chairman of Ohimini LGA, Gabriel Adole, also confirmed that the abductors actually dumped the corpse.

Adole, however, said that security operatives had been deployed to the forest to rescue the one being held captive.

“The corpse had already been taken to Okpokwu for burial. It was one of them that is still with the kidnappers. They are yet to release him.

“As we speak (Sunday evening), the security operatives—conventional policemen, soldiers and other security agents—are still in the bush trying to rescue the victim,” Adole said.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the state police command, Udeme Edet, when contacted, said she had yet to receive the report of the kidnapping from the Divisional Police Officer of Ohimini LGA.
