Horror as Brit boy, 17, dies while snorkelling on school trip

A 17-year-old pupil from a London school has tragically died while snorkelling on a trip to Malawi, Africa. The Malawi Police Service (MPS) identified the boy as Eugene Enoch Kwon, a student at Hampton School in South-west London.

Fellow pupils from the school had been snorkelling in Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay, on Tuesday when he disappeared beneath the surface. The teenager was subsequently discovered underwater by divers following an extensive search of the lake.

He was rushed to Monkey Bay Community Hospital for emergency treatment, but sadly passed away from suffocation due to drowning, according to police.

Superintendent Patrick Mussa, of the Eastern Region Police Headquarters at the Malawi Police Service, confirmed that Eugene’s disappearance prompted an “immediate search operation”.

He added: “After an extensive search, divers located him underwater… Police in the Eastern Region have since expressed their condolences to the bereaved family, while investigations into the incident continue.”

A spokesperson for Hampton School, a private school for boys in Richmond upon Thames, said: “Our thoughts, love and deepest sympathies are with the pupil’s family and loved ones at this unimaginably difficult time.

“At present, our focus is supporting the pupil’s family and everyone affected within our school community.”
