Kano Government Cracks Down on Illegal Activities Under Bridges

The Kano State Government has threatened to prosecute anyone who violates the law and stated that it will not permit bridges constructed with billions of naira to be used as markets or locations for illicit activities.

Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, the Chairman of the Kano State Special Taskforce on Illegal Structures, issued the warning while inspecting Tal’udu Bridge as part of the committee’s continuous enforcement operation around the city of Kano.

A taskforce chairman identified as Dr. Sani has ordered hawkers and scavengers operating beneath the bridge to vacate the area with immediate effect, warning that government would no longer condone the abuse of public infrastructure.

He explained that permitting people to turn bridges into trading spots or venues for other unauthorised activities undermines the very purpose for which such structures were constructed.

According to him, the location was never meant to serve as a market, a dumping ground for scavengers, or a playing field, and he warned that anyone caught flouting the rules would face prosecution.

He stated that the administration was resolved to restore sanity around public facilities and safeguard investments made from public funds.

The chairman further appealed to residents to embrace a more responsible attitude toward public infrastructure, pointing out that cities become cleaner and better organised when citizens comply with environmental regulations.

He stressed the need for a change in orientation, particularly in Kano, if the state is to achieve a cleaner, safer, and more organised environment.

He cited Saudi Arabia and other developed nations as examples where strict enforcement of environmental laws makes it difficult for people to dump refuse carelessly or misuse public facilities.
