“Lagos Re-Arraigns Widow Over Late Husband’s Alleged Illegal Medical Practice” — Court Fixes October 28 For Trial

The Lagos State Government has re-arraigned a widow, Kafayat Oyelakin, before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja over allegations that she failed to stop her late husband from practising medicine despite allegedly knowing that he was not a qualified medical doctor.

Oyelakin was re-arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala following the death of her husband, Oyelakin Sunday Oladapo, who was initially the principal defendant in the case.

The late Oladapo, said to have been a microbiologist, had been standing trial for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor and obtaining money from several victims under false pretences.

Following his death, the prosecution amended the charge, leaving Kafayat as the sole defendant.

The prosecution alleged that between 2015 and 2022, the defendant knew that her husband was not a qualified medical doctor but allowed him to administer drugs and injections to patients at their residence in Kajola Estate, Agbara, Lagos.

Prosecuting counsel, Obayemi Azeez, also told the court that Kafayat allegedly failed to prevent her husband from engaging in the activities or report him to the relevant medical and government authorities.

When the amended two-count charge was read to her, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

During the proceedings, Azeez informed the court of the amended information dated May 8, 2026.

Defence counsel, John Omotunde, confirmed receipt of the amended charge and did not oppose the prosecution’s application for a trial date.

He also did not oppose the prosecution’s request for the issuance of a witness summons for its first witness.

Justice Ogala granted the applications and ordered that the defendant should continue to enjoy the terms of her existing bail.

The judge adjourned the matter to October 28, 2026, for continuation of trial.
