Mohbad Investigation: Coalition defends AIG Jimoh, dismisses allegations as ‘false blackmail’

A coalition of rights activists has defended a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police and current Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Olohundare Jimoh, over allegations linking him to the investigation into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Addressing journalists in Lagos, on Monday, the coalition described the allegations as part of a campaign of blackmail allegedly orchestrated by individuals facing criminal prosecution.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Comrade Declan Ihekaire, said a review of the leadership of the Lagos State Police command showed that Jimoh was not the Commissioner of Police, when Mohbad died on September 12, 2023.

According to Ihekaire, the Lagos Commissioner of Police at the time was CP Idowu Owohunwa, who oversaw the initial investigation into the singer’s death before handing over to CP Adegoke Fayoade in December 2023, following his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

He explained that Fayoade served until September 17, 2024, when CP Ishola Olawale took over.

Jimoh, he noted, only assumed office as Lagos Commissioner of Police on February 18, 2025, and remained in the position until March 2026, when he was succeeded by CP Tijani Fatai.

“The timeline is clear and verifiable. It is, therefore, misleading to suggest that AIG Olohundare Jimoh investigated the Mohbad case, when he was not the commissioner of Police at the time of the incident,” Ihekaire said.

He alleged that those making the claims were individuals facing investigations or prosecution over offences, like murder and land-grabbing.

He also defended the Nigeria Police Force, saying the institution operates within established procedures for crime prevention, investigation and prosecution. It stressed that criminal investigations are guided by due process and established protocols rather than public speculation.
