Nearly 100 Cases of Salmonella Tied to Voluntary Recall of 19 Million Eggs

Nearly 100 people have been reported sickened with salmonella starting in November amid a recall of 19 million eggs linked at least to part of the outbreak, according to the federal Food and Drug Administration.

The 98 illnesses have been reported in 17 states, the agency said. The cases of salmonella were reported starting on Nov. 21, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

Those infected reported eating eggs before becoming ill, the F.D.A. said. It said that 26 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

On Wednesday, Midwest Poultry Services of North Manchester, Ind., said it was voluntarily recalling nearly 19 million white-shell and brown cage-free shell eggs sold under several brand names at grocery stores in six states after samples collected at farms in Texas tested positive for salmonella.

As part of its investigation, the F.D.A. said it had conducted a “traceback investigation based on where ill people reported purchasing or eating eggs during the time frame of interest, and Midwest Poultry Services, L.P. was identified as a common egg source.”

The agency added that the company did not account for all the illnesses in this outbreak. “Additional investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other sources of illness,” it said.

The recalled eggs were produced and distributed between June 6 and July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and Aug. 17, the agency said.

In an emailed statement, Midwest Poultry Services said that it was recalling the eggs “as a precautionary measure.”

“Producing safe, quality food for those who eat our eggs is our highest priority,” the company said, “and this voluntary investigation and recall demonstrates that commitment.”

The recalled cartons have the identifying code P-1950 or 0840962 printed on the side, along with a Julian date (a three-digit number ranging from 001 for Jan. 1 to 365 for Dec. 31) of 157 to 184.

The eggs were sold at Kroger supermarkets in Texas and Louisiana and at Brookshire’s grocery stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as at smaller retail outlets, the F.D.A. said.

The recalled products include:

• Kroger large eggs in cartons of 12, 18 and 60.

• Simple Truth cage-free medium brown eggs cartons of 12, 18 and 24.

• Brookshire’s large eggs in cartons of six, 12, 18, 36 and 60.

• Country Morning large eggs in cartons of 12 and 18, and medium and extra-large eggs in 12-count cartons.

Midwest Poultry Services is not currently distributing fresh eggs produced at its Texas farms, the F.D.A. said.

Consumers should not consume the eggs, which may be returned to the original point of purchase for a refund, the F.D.A. said.

The 98 salmonella cases have been reported in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia, according to the F.D.A.

Texas had the most cases, with 73.

What is salmonella?

Salmonella, which sickens an estimated 1.35 million people in the United States each year, is the nation’s most frequently reported cause of food-borne illness, according to the Department of Agriculture.

Because the bacteria thrive in animal intestines, they wind up in animal feces — and then, sometimes, on animal feet and fur. That can allow salmonella to spread to other locations, including crop fields and food processing plants, where the bacteria can contaminate produce and packaged foods.

The bacteria can get on egg shells when hens lay eggs or if the eggs touch bird droppings after being laid. Salmonella can also contaminate eggs as they are forming inside the hen before they form a shell.

What are the symptoms of a salmonella infection?

The infection caused by the bacteria is called salmonellosis.

Symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea and vomiting. In extreme cases, salmonella can contaminate the human bloodstream and cause infection and severe inflammation of the arteries, endocarditis and arthritis.
