Nigerian AI Expert Advances Healthcare Research With Disease Prediction Technology

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly central to modern healthcare, Nigerian statistician and AI expert Oladimeji Adewuyi is advancing research aimed at making AI-powered clinical decision-making more accurate, transparent and reliable.

Adewuyi’s work focuses on developing predictive models that integrate Bayesian statistics, machine learning, biostatistics and epidemiology to help healthcare professionals forecast disease outbreaks, identify high-risk patients and support evidence-based medical decisions.

His latest research, titled “Bayesian Hierarchical Spatiotemporal Prediction of Multi-Pathogen Outbreak: Integrating Mobility and Environmental Exposures,” explores how Bayesian hierarchical models can improve infectious disease forecasting by combining mobility patterns, environmental exposures and disease surveillance data.

The study, presented at the 2026 New Researchers Conference, highlights the growing role of advanced statistical modelling in strengthening disease surveillance and improving epidemic preparedness.

According to Adewuyi, the future of artificial intelligence in healthcare depends not only on building more sophisticated algorithms but also on ensuring that predictive models remain scientifically sound, interpretable and trustworthy enough for clinicians and policymakers to rely on.

His research portfolio also includes studies on causal inference methods for evaluating vaccine hesitancy interventions, high-dimensional survival analysis for precision public health, and statistical approaches to understanding foodborne pathogens and the socioeconomic determinants of health.

Collectively, these studies aim to bridge the gap between complex mathematical modelling and practical healthcare delivery by applying advanced analytics to real-world public health challenges.

Beyond research, Adewuyi contributes to the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence systems as an AI Trainer with Handshake AI, where he designs domain-specific prompts, evaluates AI-generated outputs and helps develop frameworks that improve reasoning quality, factual accuracy and the overall reliability of AI systems.

He also works as a Risk Consultant and Analyst at Apexfinity Solutions LLC in the United States, developing predictive risk models, regression analyses and data visualisation tools that support strategic business decision-making.

Adewuyi earned a Bachelor of Technology in Statistics from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where his undergraduate research examined Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product between 2000 and 2019 using time series regression analysis.

He later received a merit-based scholarship to pursue a Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics at Georgia State University, Atlanta, where he served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, supporting instruction in statistics, biostatistics and statistical computing.

His expertise has also earned him an invitation to serve as a peer reviewer for the international medical journal Cureus, evaluating research in biostatistics, epidemiology and healthcare analytics for methodological and statistical quality.

Adewuyi has presented his research at several professional conferences in the United States, including the Industrial and Computational Mathematics Satellite Conference, the Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference and the New Researchers Conference.

With healthcare systems around the world increasingly adopting artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, researchers capable of combining statistical rigour with practical implementation are becoming increasingly important.

Adewuyi’s work reflects the growing contribution of African researchers to the development of evidence-based, AI-driven healthcare solutions designed to improve patient outcomes and strengthen public health preparedness.
