Retired AIG, Senior Police Officer Die Days Apart

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) ordered an investigation after the passenger’s claims of harassment and attempted extortion at Osubi Airport in Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State, went viral. Airport officials have given their version of the incident.

According to the statement, Olatunde died at his residence in Lagos on July 23, while Gwani passed away on July 19 at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment following a brief illness.

The Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Force extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased officers, commending their years of selfless service and honour to the nation.

The Force prayed for the repose of their souls and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the losses.

According to the police, Olatunde joined the Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and served for more than 33 years before retiring as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations on November 3, 2025.

During his career, he held several command and operational roles across the Abia, Lagos, Osun and Benue State commands, as well as at the Force Headquarters, including serving as Divisional Police Officer in Ikire.

Assistant and later Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations at the Western Port Authority in Lagos, Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters, and later AIG Operations.

He is survived by his wife and children.

The Force also disclosed that Gwani, a native of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, was born on November 11, 1970, and enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on November 10, 1997.

He served in several strategic positions during his nearly three decades in the Force before his death in Egypt. His burial, the statement noted, was conducted in Cairo in accordance with Islamic rites.
