SSANU demands immediate implementation of 2026 agreement

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called for the immediate implementation of the 2026 Federal Government/SSANU Agreement across public universities.

The association made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its 55th National Executive Council meeting and signed by its National President,  Muhammad Ibrahim, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Ibrahim said the agreement, signed on June 29, marked the successful conclusion of years of negotiations between the Federal Government and the association.

He described the agreement as a landmark achievement made possible through the resilience, unity and sacrifices of SSANU members nationwide.

“NEC urges the Federal and State Governments to urgently release the funds for the implementation of the agreement and payment of arrears of the approved review to our members without further delay,” he said.

According to him, the agreement provides a 35 per cent upward review of emoluments through the Consolidated Non-Teaching Staff Allowance (CONTTA).

He added that it provides improved earned allowances, staff training and development, protection of non-teaching positions and career progression for qualified degree holders up to CONTISS 15.

“The implementation of the agreement must be done promptly, fully and without encroachment or discrimination. Council also calls for the immediate activation of the Implementation Monitoring Committee to ensure compliance and address violations.”

Ibrahim, who is the Chairman Joint Action Committee of NASU and SSANU, commended the National Universities Commission for forwarding the signed agreement to public universities and inter-university centres for implementation.

The SSANU president also acknowledged the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission for issuing the implementation circular.

He commended the Federal Government, the negotiation committee and relevant ministries for concluding the renegotiation process through constructive engagement.

Ibrahim urged vice-chancellors and heads of institutions who are yet to implement and pay the outstanding 25 and 35 per cent salary increase arrears to do so without delay.

He said prompt payment would boost staff morale and help cushion the impact of the prevailing economic hardship on university workers.

“We warn against the denial of negotiated benefits, punitive postings, delayed promotions, harassment or any form of victimisation arising from members’ participation in lawful union activities,” he said.

He said branches had been directed to maintain accurate membership records and report cases of non-compliance, marginalisation and victimisation through appropriate union structures.

He therefore reaffirmed SSANU’s commitment to industrial harmony, constructive dialogue and effective implementation of the 2026 agreement, urging members to remain united, disciplined and vigilant.
