Toke Makinwa responds to backlash over comments on women supporting their male partners financially

Media personality Toke Makinwa has addressed critics following the widespread backlash over her recent comments regarding women who financially support their male partners.

The controversy erupted during a recent interview with reality television star Mercy Eke. During the conversation, Makinwa admitted that she struggles to comprehend dynamics where women provide monetary assistance to men. She went on to state that her personal approach involves immediately sharing her financial responsibilities with any man she dates. Illustrating her point, she noted that if a partner has ₦5,000, she firmly expects at least ₦3,000 of that amount to be spent on her.

‘’When I hear women say these things, I sit down and I ask myself…..”Men don’t ask me for money?”Maybe there is something written on my head. Maybe before you say ….I give you all my problems. Before you ask me, I am already listing all my problems…Today I have headache,,,maybe that is why! I have never dated a guy who asked me for money.

Even if I date a broke guy and he earns 5k, at least 3k out of that money, he will give it to me. I am thankful for that grace because I have never dated a guy who has confidently asked me for money” she said

The remarks quickly drew the ire of social media users, with many netizens slamming the media host for promoting what they viewed as an overly transactional perspective on romance. Critics argued that her stance unjustly implies a woman’s affection must always be financially rewarded by a man.

Responding to the uproar, Makinwa clarified that her statements were intended to be lighthearted. Addressing the criticism, she emphasized her core belief that money should never serve as the sole foundation of love or a healthy relationship
