Trump-loving Argentina president becomes ‘laughing stock’ after World Cup tweet misfire

Argentine President Javier Milei ignited howls of laughter after firing off a celebratory tweet — moments after his nation suffered a pulverizing loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup championship.
The Donald Trump ally apparently neglected to unschedule a victory tweet Sunday and announced to his followers plans to celebrate the Argentine National Team, which fell 1-0 to Spain and became the first team in World Cup final history that did not attempt a shot on goal in regulation time in World Cup final history.
“WORLD CELEBRATION,” Milei crowed on X. “Given the concern about the celebrations for the achievement reached by the Argentine National Team, I inform the population that, depending on what the Players and the Technical Staff decide regarding the day to celebrate, it will be declared a national holiday.”
Milei had announced before the game that he would not attend, citing his personal superstitions, but he declared a national holiday afterward for what turned out to be a runner-up finish for soccer legend Lionel Messi’s likely last World Cup appearance.
“Embarrassing. Milei neglected to unschedule his victory tweet declaring an Argentina national holiday to celebrate the World Cup win Netanyahu promised him,” slammed former Federal Reserve banker Kathleen Tyson. “Oops.”
“Javier Milei becomes the laughingstock of the world: he forgot to delete a scheduled tweet announcing Argentina’s victory and a subsequent public holiday… even though the team lost the final,” posted French media outlet Focus.
“What are you celebrating man? You guys lost?” wondered widely followed X user Dr. Parik Patel.
