Two suspected cult members in court for allegedly beating cops in Abuja

Two suspected cult members were on Tuesday arraigned in a Dutse Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly assaulting police officers and resisting arrest.

The police charged Ogene Bright, 23 and Sunday Adamu,25, with unlawful assembly, resisting arrest, causing grievous hurt and criminal intimidation of police officers.

They however pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Ogehenekaro Agbodo, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 17.

On the said date, she said ASP Tukur Abubakar led a team of police detectives to invite Bright, Adamu and one Victor Adamu, at large to the police station.

She said they were invited based on complaints from some members of Tasha village, in Abuja that the defendants were terrorising villagers.

“The defendants violently refused to honour police invitation. Adamu, at large, attacked and inflicted an injuries on ASP Abubakar, the DCO3 Of Gwagwa division, Abuja. The defendants called other members of their fraternity who joined in attacking the police men. They also threatened to kill the police officers if they laid hands on any of their members,” she told the court.

Ms Agbodo said that reinforcement was however made by the police on July 18 which led to the arrest of the defendants.

According to her, during police investigation and interrogation, the defendants could not give a satisfactory account of their actions.

Ms Agbodo said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 103,171,248 and 379 of the penal code law.

The Senior Magisterate, Ibrahim Alkali, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N2 million each and teo sureties each in like sum.

He ordered that the sureties must either be civil servants on GL14 or a reputable member of society with reliable means of identification.

Mr Alkali adjourned the matter until September 14 for hearing.
