Vector Rejects Bride Price Ownership Belief in Yoruba Marriage Tradition

Nigerian rapper Vector has sparked conversation after challenging the notion that paying a bride price grants a man ownership over his wife, insisting that such a belief has no place in Yoruba culture.

Speaking on a podcast alongside media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu and singer Banky W, Vector explained that bride price is purely a cultural tradition and should never be interpreted as a form of ownership. “In Yoruba culture, you can’t own a woman,” he said.

The rapper argued that while bride price remains an important part of traditional marriage rites, it does not give a husband control over his wife.

“It is foolish to think that because you paid however much as bride price, you now own her,” he said.
