Why Egypt Women Wear Seven Stars Without Winning WAFCON

Despite never winning the continental competition, Egypt’s women’s national football team has drawn attention at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for sporting seven stars above its crest.

Many fans are asking if the women of the Pharaohs have a hidden prize trove after seeing the stars.

The success of Egypt’s men’s national team, however, provides the rationale.

Rather than representing titles won by the women’s side, the seven stars on Egypt’s badge honour the men’s record seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumphs, the most by any nation in the competition’s history.

Egypt won AFCON titles in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, cementing their status as Africa’s most successful men’s national team.

The women’s team, by contrast, is still chasing its first major continental honour, having neither won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations nor reached the latter stages of the tournament.

Unlike some national teams that use stars to represent achievements specific to the team wearing the badge.

Egyptian Football Association has opted to display the stars as a broader symbol of the country’s overall footballing success, reflecting the achievements of the men’s national side across the entire national football setup.

The badge has sparked conversation during the ongoing WAFCON tournament, with many supporters initially assuming the stars represented titles won by the women’s team, before later discovering that they instead commemorate Egypt’s dominance in the men’s AFCON.
