American Missionary Freed After Nine Months in Niger Captivity

An American Christian missionary has regained freedom after spending more than nine months in captivity following his abduction in Niger.

His organisation announced on Friday that Kevin Rideout was in good health and in the care of US officials.

Rideout was taken from outside his residence in Niger’s capital in October 2025 by three armed men who transported him to the western Tillaberi region, an area associated with militant operations.

Media reports indicated he is currently in custody of federal investigators, though specific details regarding the circumstances of his release and his captors’ identity remained undisclosed.

Concerns had existed that Rideout may have been abducted by militant groups, potentially including members of jihadist organisations active in the Sahel.

Diplomatic sources reported that armed men conveyed Rideout to Tillaberi following his initial abduction.

The US government had issued warnings to its citizens against travel to Niger shortly after the kidnapping, citing heightened risks from terrorism, criminal activity and civil instability.

Rideout, who also works as a pilot, had served as a Christian missionary in Niger for 19 years and functioned as a pilot for his organisation, which operates across more than 70 countries.

His organisation characterised his release as significant news following months of uncertainty regarding his condition.

The group indicated Rideout would soon reconnect with his spouse, children and broader family members.

The family had requested privacy during their reunion following the extended separation and expressed profound gratitude for prayers offered on their behalf throughout his confinement.

Rideout’s release occurs as ongoing insecurity persists across Niger and neighbouring regions of the Sahel, where jihadist organisations continue conducting att@cks and abductions targeting civilians and military personnel.

Several countries in the region have faced sustained militant violence for over a decade, resulting in substantial casualties and large-scale population displacement.

The area has additionally experienced successive military coups, with democratically elected administrations replaced in multiple nations.
