Great white shark Percy pings 14 miles from Long Island coast

This Video Is Trending Right Now
Percy, a subadult great white shark, is making moves up the coast of Long Island, most likely heading further north toward cooler waters.
Tagged just over a year ago on July 28, 2025, by OCEARCH in collaboration with the Tancook Islands Marine Field Station off the coast of Nova Scotia, Percy has made the trek from Canada all the way down into the Gulf and back up the East Coast.
In that time, he’s traveled 4,660 miles, according to OCEARCH data.
Percy was 432 pounds and 9 feet, 9 inches long when he was tagged.
He was the sixth shark tagged during OCEARCH’s summer residency field research study in 2025.
On Tuesday, exactly a year after he was tagged, Percy pinged just off the coast of Long Island, about 14 miles from Ocean Beach, New York.
In less than a day, Percy traveled from off the coast of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, up to Long Island.

Percy’s movements are helping OCEARCH scientists and researchers learn more about young white sharks’ seasonal movements.
OCEARCH is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and protecting sharks, whales, sea turtles and other ocean life, tagging these animals to track and study their migration habits and behaviors from afar.
Keep up with Percy and more than 400 other ocean animals in real time using the free OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker app.
