21-Year-Old Umar Idris Sentenced to Death by Hanging in Kano

A 21-year-old man named Umar Idris was given a death by hanging sentence by a Kano State High Court for the murder of Sabiu Umar, a store owner.

Idris, a resident of Kumbotso Local Government Area’s Farawa Quarters, was convicted of culpable homicide after the prosecution proved that he had fatally stabbed the 28-year-old victim.

Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the prosecution’s attorney, informed the court that the event took place at Kano’s Tsamiya Mariri Quarters on September 2, 2021. He clarified that at around 10:30 p.m., Idris broke into the victim’s shop, where Sabiu resided and worked, and took bridal clothes meant for his bride.

The prosecution claims that after learning of the intrusion, the deceased raised an alarm, which sparked a confrontation. Idris allegedly assaulted him with a knife during the struggle, causing numerous injuries to his neck, shoulder, and other body parts that finally resulted in his death.

In addition to offering the defendant’s confessional statement as evidence, the prosecution called three witnesses. Idris, however, denied perpetrating the crime.

Muftau Bello, the accused’s attorney, called two witnesses in his defense and asked the court for leniency.

Judge Sunusi Ado-Ma’aji ruled that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Idris was accordingly given a hanging death sentence by the judge.

“I hereby sentence Idris to death by hanging for killing the victim by stabbing him in the neck, shoulder, and other areas of his body. The judge declared, “May the Lord have mercy on his soul.”
