Abuja Police Officers To Undergo Psychological, Mental Health Test

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja Command, Ahmed Sanusi, has ordered a comprehensive psychological and mental health assessment for all personnel in the command.

The directive, according to the police, is part of renewed efforts to strengthen discipline, professionalism, and operational efficiency within the force.

Naija News reports that the development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, after an emergency meeting involving Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units.

Sanusi said the exercise is designed to enhance officers’ emotional stability, improve judgment, and boost overall performance in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The statement noted that the assessment would begin with junior officers on Monday, May 4, 2026.

“In a decisive move to strengthen discipline, welfare, and operational efficiency, the Commissioner of Police also directed the Command’s Medical Director, ACP (Dr.) Ifayase Olabanji Akinola and the Police Counselling Unit, to commence a comprehensive psychological and mental health assessment of all personnel of the command.

“The exercise, which will begin with junior officers on Monday, 4th May 2026, is aimed at enhancing emotional stability, sound judgment, and overall performance, both on and off duty,” the statement partly read.

The police boss stressed that the initiative forms part of broader reforms to ensure officers maintain the highest standards of conduct both on and off duty.

Sanusi also issued a stern warning against indiscipline, urging officers to uphold professionalism and strictly adhere to human rights laws while carrying out their duties.

He directed senior officers to return to their respective formations and brief their subordinates on the new directives, adding that compliance reports must be submitted to the command headquarters.

The CP further warned that supervising officers would be held accountable for the actions of personnel under their command.

The police commissioner called on residents of the FCT to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to security agencies through designated emergency lines.

The move comes amid renewed public concern over police conduct following a viral video from Delta State, which showed a police officer allegedly involved in the killing of a suspect.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage and triggered internal disciplinary actions within the force, further intensifying calls for accountability and reform.
