Following President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments that Nigerians were better off than some inhabitants of other African nations, Kenyan President William Ruto retaliated, sparking a flurry of responses on social media.
Recall that Tinubu recently made remarks directed at Kenyans while visiting Bayelsa State, where he defended his administration’s economic policies and commissioned important infrastructure projects in face of growing worries about rising living expenses and gasoline costs.
“Being truthful with our folks is incredibly important. Yes, I hear you from a number of economic perspectives. The cost of fuel is really high, yet take a look around and let’s give thanks to God for your improved circumstances. Pay attention to what they are doing in Kenya and other African nations.
However, Ruto dismissed the analogy in his answer, which was captured in a now-viral video, pointing out Nigeria’s infrastructure problems, especially the country’s ongoing energy shortages, and making fun of the English spoken by Nigerians.
“We have a good education. We speak English well. We have the world’s best English. You will require a translator if you hear someone from Nigeria speak English. Ruto remarked, “We have the best human capital anywhere in the world,” which sparked both laughter and criticism on the internet.
The conversation took place in the context of more general economic strains on African countries, such as growing fuel prices brought on by disruptions in the global supply chain and geopolitical unrest, especially in the vicinity of crucial oil transit routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
Social media users have responded quickly and in different ways, criticizing the exchange’s tone and urging more attention to be paid to domestic economic issues rather than making cross-national comparisons.
