Amupitan May Be Sacked As INEC Chairman Because He Lied To The Public – Ex Presidential Candidate

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has reacted on the controversy surrounding alleged social media activity linked to Professor Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Adebayo said the issue is not only about the content being shared online but also about trust and truth in public office.

Naija News reports that he noted that questions around the matter go into the credibility of statements made by public officials, especially those in sensitive positions like the head of the electoral body.

He explained that the National Assembly has the power under the constitution to invite the INEC Chairman to appear before lawmakers and give sworn testimony on the issue.

According to him, if such testimony is given under oath and later proven false through proper investigation, including forensic checks, it could lead to serious consequences.

Adebayo further stated that if there is clear proof that contradicts sworn statements, it would not be about the alleged post itself but about dishonesty to the public.

He added that the position of INEC Chairman demands a high level of trust and honesty because of the responsibility involved in managing elections in the country.

According to him, “The National Assembly can call him and ask him to swear to an oath to speak to us. If he swears to an oath in front of the National Assembly and continues to maintain his position, and a forensic examination by the National Assembly shows that it’s actually his post, he could be removed, not because he posted, but because he’s lying to the public. And INEC chairmanship is an office where you are expected to be a person of integrity.”
