As momentum gathers on the decade long agitation for the creation of Anioma state, optimism is rising among proponents who see the development as both historic and inevitable. For decades, the demand has remained a recurring subject in Nigeria’s constitutional discourse, but recent legislative progress at the National Assembly has renewed hopes that the dream may finally be within reach.

In this interview, the Media and Publicity Director of the Anioma State Creation Technical Committee, Chief Tonnie Oganah, speaks on the significance of the proposal’s advancement, the political dynamics shaping its prospects, and the expectations of the Anioma people. He also addresses concerns over opposition, outlines the constitutional process ahead, and reflects on the broader implications of state creation for identity, development and national cohesion.

Now that Anioma State seems closer than ever to becoming a reality, how do you respond to this progress?

All I have to say is that we have God to thank. Anioma has God to thank. Anioma also appreciates the role of the APC, particularly if the process continues beyond political cycles and leads to actual state creation. Thanks to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives progress has been steady at the legislative level. As you know, such processes originate from the legislature, while the executive provides final assent.

Anioma is fortunate in several ways. Many governors across Nigeria are members of the APC, and we are optimistic that institutional support will be mobilised where necessary. With the required two-thirds majority from state assemblies, Anioma stands a strong chance. The expectation is that representatives at all levels will act in the interest of their constituents. This is a time for unity among Anioma people. The focus should be on achieving the creation of the state. Once that is done, the democratic process will allow qualified individuals to contest for leadership positions. This movement has a long history, dating back decades, with early advocates laying the foundation. Today, it is being championed by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, who has played a significant role in advancing the cause.

The proposal has reportedly been read in the National Assembly, what exactly does that mean in terms of progress and next steps?

It means the process is advancing. The next stage is the third reading, followed by concurrence between both chambers of the National Assembly. After that, the process moves to a referendum. A referendum will involve a vote organised by INEC, where the people of Anioma will be asked a simple question: whether they support the creation of Anioma State. Other issues, such as boundary adjustments or leadership, will be addressed at later stages. If approved, the creation of Anioma State could bring economic opportunities, including improved infrastructure, increased investment, and enhanced regional development.

For instance, collaboration with neighbouring states could boost trade and reduce pressure on existing commercial hubs. Asaba, the proposed capital, already has significant infrastructure, which makes the transition more practical compared to creating a state from scratch elsewhere.

What about the non Igbo-speaking parts of Delta State, are they happy to let Anioma go?

From my interactions, there appears to be openness among some stakeholders regarding the proposal. However, views may differ across communities. The Anioma people share cultural and historical ties with the broader Igbo nation, and many see the proposed state as an opportunity to strengthen that identity. Historically, colonial administrative decisions contributed to the current distribution of ethnic groups across different states. For many, the push for Anioma State is about identity, representation, and development, rather than division.

How many communities will make up Anioma State?

There are nine local government areas: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani. These areas are rich in human and natural resources and have strong potential for growth.

Why do you think Ned should return to the Senate in 2027?

The current senator has demonstrated commitment to the Anioma cause, particularly in advancing the state creation process. Many supporters believe continuity would help ensure the initiative is seen through to completion. He has also invested significant personal effort into the project. His background as an international lawyer and his achievements outside politics are well known, and his supporters see his involvement as driven by a sense of responsibility to his people.

Who are the opponents of Anioma State creation?

Among the traditional rulers and stakeholders in Anioma land, only a small number have expressed reservations about the proposal. Their concerns appear to centre on issues of influence and political structure. However, it is important to emphasise that differing views are part of a healthy democratic process. The focus should remain on dialogue, inclusion and ensuring that the interests of the people are prioritised.

The creation of Anioma State is seen by supporters as an opportunity for economic growth, improved governance, and enhanced development. It is also viewed as a way to create an enabling environment for businesses and infrastructure projects. Ultimately, the process will involve a transition period, including administrative arrangements and the sharing of assets and liabilities. After that, democratic elections will be conducted, allowing the people to choose their leaders.
