Ex-militant calls for return of fleeing Benue monarchs

A renewed call has been made for traditional rulers from the Sankera axis of Benue State to return to their communities after years of displacement caused by persistent insecurity.

The appeal was made by a repentant militant leader, Mr. Terzulum Amakaa Akwaza, popularly known as Amakaa Overall Konyo. He urged monarchs who fled Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo Local Government Areas to return home and reclaim their traditional responsibilities.

Sankera has remained one of the most affected areas in Benue State’s security crisis, with violent clashes spanning nearly two decades.

At the height of the unrest, several traditional rulers reportedly abandoned their communities due to direct threats and fears of being targeted.

The situation prompted the declaration of emergency security measures during the administration of former Governor, Samuel Ortom, as authorities sought to contain escalating violence in the region.

In recent months, peace efforts have gained momentum following the “lay down your arms” appeal by the Benue State Government.

Several former militant figures, including Akwaza and others, have reportedly embraced the peace process.

The reconciliation initiative is being supported by religious and community leaders, including Most Rev. Isaac Bundepuun Dugu, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina-Ala and Co-Chair of the Sankera Peace and Reconciliation Committee.

The committee was inaugurated after Governor Hyacinth Alia assumed office.

As part of the ongoing peace engagement, Konyo’s latest appeal is being viewed by observers as a sign of gradual confidence in the stabilisation of the region.

According to sources familiar with the development, traditional rulers from Sankera held a private meeting with the Tor Tiv, HRM, Prof. James Ayatse, on Friday.

However, details of the meeting remain undisclosed, as the Tor Tiv’s media aide, Mr. Freddie Adamgbe, declined to comment when contacted.

Despite the peace initiatives, many displaced monarchs are yet to return to their communities, underscoring the fragile nature of trust in the area.
