Kano Assembly screens deputy gov nominee Garo Monday

The Kano State House of Assembly has scheduled Monday for the screening of Murtala Garo, following his nomination for the office of Deputy Governor by Governor Abba Yusuf.
This was disclosed in a Facebook post on Wednesday by Kamaludden Shawai, the spokesperson to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Jibril Falgore.
The post confirmed that the Assembly had officially received correspondence from the governor regarding the nomination of Garo for proper screening and approval.
“The Kano State House of Assembly has officially announced a correspondence of His Excellency’s nominee for the office of deputy governor for proper screening and approval,” the statement read.
It added that Garo’s screening had been scheduled to take place on Monday.
Earlier, the governor had transmitted Garo’s name to the Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor.
The nomination was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
“The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the governor to nominate a deputy governor where a vacancy exists,” the statement said.
“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the governor has requested the assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement added.
The deputy governorship position became vacant following the voluntary resignation of the former deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.
Muhammad described the nominee as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in elective and appointed offices.
He stated that the 48-year-old politician had served as the state organising secretary of his party, special adviser to the Kano State Governor and elected chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
Garo also served as chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria in Kano State and commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs.
He was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections.
The statement added that the nomination formed part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen governance and sustain effective service delivery in the state, putting to rest speculation over who would emerge as the next deputy governor.
