Ex-vigilante commander allegedly kills wife, 2 others in Abia community

Panic, grief and disbelief have gripped Amakama community in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State following a gruesome incident in which a former vigilante commander (name withheld) allegedly unleashed deadly violence that left multiple casualties.

The tragic episode, which reportedly unfolded within a short span, has cast a dark shadow over the once-peaceful community, with residents still struggling to comprehend the scale of the horror.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the suspect allegedly turned on his wife in a brutal attack, stabbing her repeatedly and inflicting fatal injuries.

In the ensuing chaos, he was further accused of opening fire on his sister-in-law, while also killing a young man who courageously attempted to intervene and stop the assault.

Sources said the rapid sequence of violence left residents stunned and helpless, as fear spread across the area, preventing any meaningful intervention.

Although authorities were yet to officially confirm the identities of all the victims at the time of filing this report, the incident has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow.

Reacting to the development, a member of a local security outfit, who pleaded anonymity, described the incident as horrible.

Expressing shock over the incident, he said it was a tragic consequence of misplaced leadership in community security structures.

“Nawaooo… in Olokoro village again? It’s always dangerous to put a sadist in charge of security—it causes more harm than good. An ex-commander of the vigilante group did this? May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he yelled.

Confirming the incident, the Abia State Police Command provided a slightly different account, stating that one person was killed, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, according to Whistlers Online, said that officers responded swiftly to a distress call and arrived at the scene to a grim discovery.

“Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Command raced to the scene, where they found the lifeless body of the deceased lying in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds,” she said.

According to her, the injured victims were promptly evacuated to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment, while the deceased was deposited in a morgue for preservation and autopsy.

DSP Chinaka said that calm had since been restored in the area, urging residents not to panic, even as she confirmed that efforts were ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspect.

“Investigation is ongoing, and we are working assiduously to bring the perpetrator to justice,” she added.

Meanwhile, the shocking incident has continued to reverberate across Amakama and neighbouring communities, with residents calling for urgent measures to strengthen local security frameworks and prevent a recurrence of such senseless violence.
