Expert attributes unemployment to private sector management of economy at ITV/Radio anniversary

BENIN CITY – A business development expert Chief Lawson OmoKhodion has blamed the Nigerian government for reducing control and handing over more business responsibilities to the private sector for over forty years which he said is partly responsible for the high rate of unemployment that does not match economic growth expectations.

He made this view as the Keynote speaker during the 29th Founder’s Day and 29 years celebration of Independent Television and Radio held in Benin City where he called for a balanced partnership between the public and private sectors to drive Nigeria’s economic direction.

Speaking on the topic “Quo Vadimus: Nigeria, where are we going”, Chief Omokhodion, said Nigeria’s economic structure remains challenged by over-reliance on privatization policies.

He called for renewed collaboration between government and private sectors noting that 29-years after the establishment of Independent Television and Radio, the company has grown into a leading broadcast voice in Nigeria and abroad, earning recognition for excellence and innovation.

The former Pro Chancellor of the Ambrose Alli University stressed that its legacy of the company continued to be celebrated through the annual Founders Day Lecture, with the 2026 edition focusing on Nigeria’s challenges and the way forward.

Chairman, Independent Television and Radio, Esama Of Benin, Sir Gabriel Igbinedion, Represented by former Chairman of Ovia north east council, Hon. Charles Igbinedion, acknowledged the dedication of staff and loyalty of clients as sustenance for the years Of ITV’s existence.

In his Remarks, Managing Director Of Independent Television And Radio, Engineer Elvis Obaseki, noted that the growth of ITV and Radio would not have been possible without the founding vision of the sir Igbinedion.

A panel discussion with stakeholders in the media, health and public sectors also examined critical national issues which borders on the need for media objectivity, positive economic reforms, and sustainability of Nigeria’s unity.

Highlight of event was the celebration of the pioneer staffs of ITV, and presentation of awards to deserving personnels with guests in attendance who gave their goodwill messages.
