Fire trucks deployed as gas explosion sparks fire at Kirikiri correctional quarters

Fire trucks were deployed after a gas explosion triggered a fire outbreak at the Nigerian Correctional Service quarters in Kirikiri, Apapa area of Lagos state.
The incident occurred around 11pm on April 22 when a fire broke out in a residential building within the quarters.
Preliminary reports indicate that the fire started following the explosion of a gas cylinder, causing it to spread rapidly to a nearby building.
Captain AA Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, disclosed this in a statement.
He said personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship WEY (NNS WEY), in collaboration with the Naval Ordnance Depot (NOD), swiftly responded to the incident. Folorunsho said two fire trucks were deployed to the scene to contain the blaze.
He said the naval team carried out a coordinated firefighting effort that brought the fire under control before it could spread further.
Folorunsho said the blaze was contained before the arrival of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Although two buildings were affected and properties lost, he said no casualties were recorded.
He said the Navy commended the professionalism and rapid response of its personnel, noting that their intervention prevented a wider disaster.
Folorunsho said the incident underscores the importance of fire safety awareness and adherence to preventive measures.
He added that the navy remains committed to supporting civil authorities and providing emergency response assistance to safeguard lives and property.
