Gunmen attack orphanage home in Kogi, abduct 23 pupils

Gunmen have attacked an orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, Lokoja, Kogi state, abducting 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor.
In a statement on Monday, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the commissioner for information and communications said the incident occurred late Sunday at the facility identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools.
He disclosed that the school was operating illegally in a remote and bushy location without registration or approval from the state government or relevant security agencies.
Fanwo said security operatives, including the police, quickly responded to the distress call and successfully rescued 15 of the abducted pupils.
He added that operations were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining eight victims and apprehend those responsible.
“The Kogi State Government commends the gallantry, professionalism, and swift response of the Police and other security agencies for rising decisively to the occasion,” he said.
The commissioner warned against the operation of unregistered schools and orphanages in isolated areas, noting that such practices expose children to serious security risks.
He urged operators of such facilities to comply with regulatory requirements and ensure proper engagement with government agencies for oversight and protection.
Fanwo assured residents that security agencies were fully on ground and efforts were ongoing to bring the situation under control.
