Idahosa family stages music tribute for matriarch at 95

BENIN CITY – In a moving blend of culture, music and communal solidarity, the family of Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon. Dennis Idahosa, is set to host a grand music fiesta in honour of their late matriarch, Madam Esther Imaguomwanruo Idahosa, as part of activities marking her final rites.

The event, initiated by the Edo State chapter of the Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN), will see a vibrant musical showcase take centre stage at the Idahosa residence from May 5, 2026—three days ahead of the burial ceremonies scheduled for May 8 to 10.

Receiving the proposal on behalf of the family on Tuesday, April 14, Idahosa expressed appreciation to the musicians’ body, led by its State Governor, Mrs. Esther Edokpayi Ebagua, for conceiving what he described as a ‘fitting tribute’ to a woman who cherished music and dance throughout her lifetime.

He assured the association of the family’s full support, pledging to provide all necessary technical assistance for the successful installation of a performance stage at the residence.

According to him, the celebration would not only honour his mother’s memory, but also reflect the rich cultural diversity of Edo State.

“You said by May 5, you want to assemble a stage here where all PMAN groups will perform. With the arrangements in place, my family will graciously accept that.

“Whatever support you need, let me know so we can set it up. My mum loved music deeply; even in spirit, I believe she would rise and dance with you,” he said.

The deputy governor noted that there could be no more meaningful way to celebrate the life of the late nonagenarian than through music that cuts across the languages and traditions of Edo’s three senatorial districts.

He described the pre-burial fiesta as a lively prelude to the final rites of a woman he said lived a virtuous and impactful life.

PMAN disclosed that featured artistes would perform pro bono as a mark of respect for the deceased, who was widely known for her love of dancing and traditional rhythms.

Even ahead of the formal festivities, the Idahosa residence has become become a hub of tribute and remembrance.

The atmosphere came alive with traditional music as women of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ovia North East, led by Princess Sonata Eweka, were in the home with songs and dances, accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the sekere percussion instrument—an instrument the late matriarch was particularly fond of.

The group said their performance was a symbolic connection to the departed, expressing belief that she was “watching and smiling” as traditional dirges were rendered in her honour.

Also present were APC women leaders from Edo South Senatorial District and representatives from the seven local government areas, led by Mrs. Vivian Inneh, who offered prayers and condolences to the grieving family.

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners, led by its State Chairman, Comrade Samuel Okhueleigbe, joined in the condolence visit, using the occasion to commend the deputy governor for fulfilling a pledge previously made to the union.
Traditional rulers and community leaders equally paid homage.

The Enogie of Idogbo, Edo-Osarobo, and the Ohen of Ikpe Community, Amadin Agbonlahor, both offered prayers for the repose of the deceased and comfort for the bereaved.

Community elders, including Odionwere Ekhator Iyoha, Odionwere Monday Omoruyi and Odionwere Charles Ekhator Idahosa, were also present to pay their last respects, while a group of elderly widows from Iguobazuwa drew emotional attention as they were warmly received and embraced by members of the household.

Several institutional groups also turned out in solidarity, including the Edo State House of Assembly Service Commission led by Hon. Ezehi Igbas; Heads of Local Government Administration and Directors of Finance and Accounts under the leadership of Kensington Osifo; former Edo Assembly Speaker,Hon. Kabiru Adjoto; alumni of the 1998 set of St. Paul Memorial Secondary School led by Eki Osawaru; and operatives of the Edo State Security Corps, Ovia South West Command, led by Osarieme Ojo.

Delegates from Okokpotun, Obaretin and Iguobazuwa communities were also present, acting on the directive of their Odionwere, Chief Samuel Ogbeide Edo, to formally condole the Idahosa family.
