INEC shifts Osun gov campaign deadline

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a consequential adjustment to the campaign timeline for the Osun State governorship election, following an earlier decision to move the poll by one week.

INEC had in February revised its timetable for the 2027 general election cycle, shifting the Osun governorship election from August 8 to August 15, 2026. That one-week change has now triggered a corresponding shift in the deadline by which political parties must wrap up their campaigns in the state.

Under Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, campaigns are required to cease no later than 24 hours before election day. With the poll now scheduled for August 15, the new deadline for all campaign activities in Osun State falls at midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who signed the statement, urged strict compliance from all parties involved.

“The Commission urges all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline,” he said.

Haruna also reaffirmed the electoral body’s broader commitment to the integrity of the electoral process, stating that “INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections.”
