Kogi govt condemns attack on illegal orphanage, rescues 15 pupils

The Kogi state government has condemned the attack on an unregistered orphanage and school facility in Zariagi, Lokoja, describing the incident as unfortunate and avoidable.

In a statement issued on Monday, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the commissioner for information and communications confirmed that 15 abducted pupils have been rescued following swift intervention by security agencies, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.

The facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of School, was reportedly operating illegally in a remote area without registration or approval from relevant authorities.

According to the statement, the attack occurred on April 26, 2026, when armed men invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils, along with the wife of the proprietor.

Security operatives, led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State, were promptly deployed, resulting in the rescue of 15 victims.

Fanwo commended the security agencies for their swift response, noting that it significantly reduced the impact of the attack.

He said efforts had been intensified to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible.

The government also warned against the operation of unregistered schools and orphanages in isolated areas, saying such practices expose children to serious security risks.

It urged operators to comply with registration requirements and engage relevant authorities for proper monitoring and safety assurance.

Kogi State reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property while sustaining ongoing rescue operations.
